Introduction to 3D Resin Printing
3D resin printing, also known as stereolithography (SLA) or digital light processing (DLP), is a highly precise and versatile technology. It involves the layer-by-layer creation of objects using liquid photopolymer resin that is cured with ultraviolet (UV) light. Known for its ability to produce intricate and detailed designs, resin printing is a favoured technique for artists, jewellers, and engineers alike.

The Resin Printing Process
- Design Creation The process begins with a 3D design, crafted using specialized software. Each design must be carefully modeled to account for structural integrity and fine details.
For creative pieces like our Highland cows, we integrate artistic touches into the digital model, ensuring every curve and texture captures the intended personality.
- Preparation for Printing Once the design is complete, it is converted into a printable file format, typically STL (Standard Tessellation Language).
Using slicing software, the 3D model is divided into thin horizontal layers. Support structures are also added to stabilize the model during the printing process, ensuring complex designs print accurately.
- Setting Up the Printer A resin 3D printer is prepared by filling the resin vat with a liquid photopolymer. This resin is selected based on the desired properties, such as durability, flexibility, or colour.
The printer bed is calibrated to ensure precise alignment, which is critical for detailed prints.
- Printing the Model The printing process begins with the UV light curing the resin layer by layer.
Depending on the model’s complexity and size, the process can take several hours. During this time, the printer’s build plate gradually rises as each cured layer forms the desired shape.
- Post-Processing Once printing is complete, the model is removed from the build plate and cleaned to remove any uncured resin.
The support structures are carefully removed to avoid damaging the model.
- Curing the Model After cleaning, the model is placed in a UV curing chamber, where additional exposure to UV light hardens the material and enhances its strength and durability.
- Finishing Touches Post-curing, the model undergoes finishing processes, such as sanding, priming, or painting, to achieve the desired look and feel.
For multi-colored pieces, pigments or paints may be applied, while transparent resins can be polished for a glass-like finish.
